Signs of Hidden Water Damage in Your Home

Most water damage is not a flood. It is a slow leak inside a wall or under a floor that shows up as a stain, a smell or a soft spot. Here is what to look for.

By Onyx Restoration & Recovery LLC · Updated

A slow leak can run for weeks before anyone sees water. By then it has soaked insulation, framing and subfloor, and mold may already be growing where you cannot see it.

Philadelphia's older rowhomes and twins are prone to it: old supply lines, shared walls, flat roofs and bathrooms stacked over kitchens. Use this guide to spot the signs, then confirm them before you open a wall. If you find something, our water damage restoration crew can measure it for you.

How to check your home for hidden water damage

  1. Look up at the ceilings. Yellow or brown rings, bubbling paint or a sagging spot, especially under bathrooms, radiators and the roof. A stain that grows or darkens after it rains or after a shower is an active leak. See our guide to ceiling water damage.
  2. Check walls and baseboards. Peeling or blistering paint, wallpaper lifting at the seams, baseboards pulling away, or drywall that feels soft or cool to the touch. Look closest along exterior walls and the wall behind the tub or toilet.
  3. Walk the floors. Soft or spongy spots, cupped or buckled hardwood, lifting tile or vinyl, and loose grout around the toilet or tub. Floors near the dishwasher, refrigerator line and washing machine deserve a second look.
  4. Use your nose. A musty, earthy smell that is stronger in one room or in a closet usually means moisture and mold you cannot see yet. Cleaning products cover it for a day; they do not fix it.
  5. Read the water meter. Turn off every faucet and appliance and note the meter. Check again in two hours without using any water. If it moved, water is going somewhere. A water bill that jumped for no reason is the same clue.
  6. Confirm it with readings before demolition. A moisture meter and a thermal camera show how far the water traveled without opening walls on a guess. That is how Onyx scopes jobs across Philadelphia, and the readings become part of your insurance record.

Where hidden leaks usually start

  • Supply lines to toilets, sinks, the dishwasher, the fridge and the washing machine
  • Failed grout or caulk around tubs and showers, leaking into the ceiling below
  • Flat or low-slope roofs and flashing around chimneys and skylights
  • Radiator valves and old steam or hot-water heating lines
  • Window frames and foundation walls where rain gets in

What to do once you find it

Stop the source if you can, take photos, and do not paint over a stain. Paint hides the evidence your insurer may want, and the wet material behind it keeps feeding mold.

If you see visible mold or smell it strongly, read mold after water damage before you start scrubbing. Wet material that has been wet for days often needs mold inspection and careful removal, not just drying.

FAQ

Common questions

How can I tell if there is water damage behind a wall?

Look for stains, soft or bubbling drywall, peeling paint, warped baseboards and a musty smell. A moisture meter or thermal camera confirms it without cutting the wall open.

Is a small ceiling stain worth worrying about?

Yes, if it is new or growing. A stain means water has already passed through the ceiling material. Finding the source early keeps the repair small.

Will homeowners insurance cover hidden water damage?

Policies often treat sudden leaks differently from slow, long-term leaks, and slow leaks are frequently excluded. Coverage is your insurer's decision, so document what you find and report it promptly.

Can I just let it dry on its own?

Open surfaces may dry, but water trapped in wall cavities, insulation and subfloor usually does not dry fast enough to stop mold. Measuring it tells you whether it needs drying equipment or removal.
